Bubble Coral Wall (Plerogyra sinuosa)

The Bubble Coral Wall (Plerogyra sinuosa) is a stunning large polyp stony (LPS) coral, prized for its continuous skeletal structure and dramatic bubble-like vesicles. Unlike branching varieties, the wall form grows along a single elongated skeleton, creating a flowing, sculpted appearance that becomes a true focal point within the aquarium.

When fully expanded, its inflated bubbles create a soft, organic look that adds movement and dimension to any reef display.

  • Colour & Appearance

The Bubble Coral Wall commonly displays attractive shades of green, cream, pearl and subtle iridescent tones. Under blue spectrum lighting, its colouration intensifies, producing a luminous glow that enhances the overall reef aesthetic.

During daylight hours, the coral inflates its signature vesicles to maximise light absorption. After lights out, feeder tentacles may extend, revealing a completely different and equally fascinating appearance.

  • Placement & Flow Requirements

The Bubble Coral Wall thrives in moderate lighting and prefers gentle to moderate water flow. Avoid strong, direct flow, as this can prevent the bubbles from fully inflating. Best positioned on the sand bed or lower rockwork to allow safe expansion.

As a wall coral, it can be more delicate than branching forms, so careful placement is essential to prevent tissue damage.

  • Care Level & Compatibility

Suitable for aquarists with some reef-keeping experience, Plerogyra sinuosa is relatively hardy in stable water conditions. It is considered semi-aggressive and may extend sweeper tentacles, particularly at night. Ensure adequate space between this coral and neighbouring species to avoid contact.

  • Water Parameters

Maintain stable reef conditions for optimal health and expansion:

Temperature: 24–26°C

Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG

Calcium: 400–450 ppm

Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm

Stable parameters are essential for long-term growth and vibrant appearance.

  • Feeding

Although photosynthetic and reliant on quality lighting, the Bubble Coral Wall will benefit from occasional target feeding with suitable coral foods or finely minced marine fare. Supplemental feeding can promote improved growth and overall vitality.

The Bubble Coral Wall (Plerogyra sinuosa) is an exceptional choice for reef keepers looking to introduce bold structure, gentle movement and classic reef beauty into their aquarium display.
