  • Cynarina Coral (Cynarina lacrymalis)

The Cynarina Coral (Cynarina lacrymalis), often known as the “Meat Coral,” is a stunning large polyp stony (LPS) coral admired for its oversized fleshy tissue and vibrant colouration. When fully expanded, Cynarina corals can inflate dramatically, creating a bold and impressive display that instantly draws attention within a reef aquarium.

  • Colour & Appearance

Cynarina corals are known for their intense and often metallic colours, including bright reds, neon greens, pinks, oranges and multi-colour variations. Their thick, fleshy tissue covers a single large polyp that can expand well beyond the size of its skeleton. Under blue spectrum lighting, their colours can appear especially vibrant, often displaying beautiful fluorescence and subtle colour gradients.

  • Placement & Flow Requirements

Cynarina lacrymalis thrives under low to moderate lighting and prefers gentle, indirect water flow. Avoid strong flow, which can irritate the delicate fleshy tissue. Best placed on the sand bed, where the coral has room to fully inflate without contact from surrounding rockwork.

  • Care Level & Compatibility

Cynarina corals are generally hardy when kept in stable reef conditions. They benefit from occasional feeding of small meaty foods, which can encourage fuller inflation and healthy growth. Adequate space should be provided as their tissue can expand significantly.
