A Golden Eye Chalice is a vibrant marine coral (often Oxypora sp.) known for its striking contrast of a red, purple, or blue base with bright, golden-yellow circular "eyes" (oral discs), forming plating or encrusting structures in reef tanks.
Prized for its fluorescence under blue lights, and requiring low-to-moderate light, gentle flow, and stable water parameters for its best display.
Appearance & Characteristics:
Color: Deep red, purple, or blue base with vivid yellow/gold mouths (eyes).
Growth: Forms plating or encrusting formations, often with bright yellow or green growth edges.
Fluorescence: Highly fluorescent, glowing intensely under actinic (blue) lighting, making it a showpiece coral.
Type: A Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral, though it can look similar to Small Polyp Stony (SPS) corals.
Care Requirements:
Lighting: Low to moderate (PAR 75-150); too much light causes bleaching, while moderate light enhances colour.
Flow: Low to moderate flow to prevent detritus buildup without disturbing polyps.
Placement: Lower in the tank or on rockwork where light and flow are reduced.
Temperament: Moderately aggressive, extending sweeper tentacles at night; needs space from other corals.
Feeding: Carnivorous, benefits from fine coral foods or micro-plankton.
Key Considerations
Variety: "Chalice coral" is a broad term for several genera (Oxypora, Echinopora, etc.), so care can vary slightly, requiring some experimentation.
Stability: Needs stable water chemistry (salinity, pH, alkalinity, calcium) for optimal health
