  • Brain Corals (Mussidae)

Brain corals are a distinctive group of large polyp stony (LPS) corals known for their intricate, maze-like skeletal formations. Their winding ridges and deep valleys closely resemble the folds of a brain, creating bold texture and visual depth within a reef aquarium.

With their fleshy tissue and pronounced structure, brain corals make impressive focal points in both mixed reef and LPS-dominated systems.

  • Colour & Appearance

Brain corals are available in a wide spectrum of colours, including vivid greens, deep reds, bright oranges, metallic blues and multi-colour variations. Many specimens feature contrasting ridges and valleys, further enhancing their sculptural appearance.

Under blue spectrum lighting, their natural fluorescence becomes more intense, producing a striking glow that adds dramatic evening viewing appeal.

  • Placement & Flow Requirements

Brain corals generally prefer moderate lighting and low to moderate water flow. Avoid strong, direct flow, as excessive movement can prevent full tissue expansion or cause irritation. Position on the sand bed or stable lower rockwork where they have room to expand naturally.

As many varieties can extend sweeper tentacles, allow adequate spacing from neighbouring corals.

  • Care Level & Compatibility

Most brain corals are considered moderately hardy once acclimated to stable reef conditions, making them suitable for aquarists with some experience.

They can exhibit semi-aggressive behaviour, particularly during night-time hours, so careful placement is important in mixed reef environments.

  • Water Parameters

Maintain consistent reef parameters for optimal health and growth:

Temperature: 24–26°C

Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG

Calcium: 400–450 ppm

Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm

Stable water chemistry is essential to maintain vibrant colouration and healthy tissue.

  • Feeding

Although primarily photosynthetic, brain corals benefit from occasional target feeding with suitable coral foods or small pieces of meaty marine fare. Supplemental feeding can encourage stronger growth, improved colour intensity and fuller tissue expansion.

Brain corals combine bold structure, vivid colour and classic reef character, making them an excellent choice for aquarists seeking to add texture, depth and long-lasting visual interest to their aquarium display.
