Blastomussa Coral (Blastomussa wellsi)

The Blastomussa Coral (Blastomussa wellsi) is a highly sought-after large polyp stony (LPS) coral, admired for its rich colouration and tightly packed, fleshy polyps. Its rounded heads form attractive clusters that create a bold yet refined presence within any reef aquarium.

With its vibrant tones and textured appearance, Blastomussa adds both colour contrast and visual depth to your aquascape.

  • Colour & Appearance

Blastomussa wellsi is available in a wide range of striking colours, including deep reds, purples, greens, blues and bi-colour variations. Under blue spectrum lighting, the coral often displays enhanced fluorescence, intensifying its natural vibrancy.

Its individual polyp heads are larger and more defined than some related species, giving it a pronounced, eye-catching structure.

  • Placement & Flow Requirements

Blastomussa thrives under low to moderate lighting and prefers gentle to moderate water flow. Avoid strong, direct flow, as this can cause the polyps to remain retracted.

Place in lower to mid-level areas of the aquarium for optimal expansion. Provide adequate spacing from more aggressive corals to prevent irritation.

  • Care Level & Compatibility

Considered relatively hardy, Blastomussa wellsi is suitable for aquarists with some reef-keeping experience and is an excellent addition to established reef systems.

It is generally peaceful, making it well-suited to mixed reef aquariums. However, as with most LPS corals, avoid direct contact with aggressive neighbours.

  • Water Parameters

For healthy growth and strong polyp expansion, maintain stable reef conditions:

Temperature: 24–26°C

Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG

Calcium: 400–450 ppm

Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm

Consistency is key to long-term success and vibrant colouration.

  • Feeding

Although photosynthetic and supported by quality lighting, Blastomussa benefits from occasional target feeding with suitable coral foods such as fine marine pellets, reef roids or finely minced frozen foods. Supplemental feeding can encourage faster growth and fuller polyp expansion.

The Blastomussa Coral (Blastomussa wellsi) is an excellent choice for reef keepers seeking rich colour, defined structure and a relatively easy-care LPS coral that brings both texture and vibrancy to the aquarium.
