  • Lobophyllia Coral (Lobophyllia spp.)

Lobophyllia corals — commonly known as Lobo corals — are striking large polyp stony (LPS) corals valued for their bold structure and intense colouration. Their thick, fleshy tissue forms deep valleys and pronounced ridges, creating a sculpted, three-dimensional appearance that adds depth and character to any reef aquarium.

With their substantial polyp size and flowing contours, Lobophyllia corals naturally become a focal point within both mixed reef and LPS-dominated systems.

  • Colour & Appearance

Lobophyllia species are available in an impressive range of colours, including rich reds, deep greens, vibrant oranges, metallic hues and multi-colour combinations. Many varieties display contrasting centres and outer rims, enhancing their visual impact.

Under blue spectrum lighting, their fluorescence intensifies, revealing glowing pigments and intricate patterns that make them especially eye-catching during evening viewing periods.

  • Placement & Flow Requirements

Lobophyllia corals thrive under moderate lighting and prefer low to moderate water flow. Avoid strong, direct flow, as excessive movement can cause tissue recession or prevent full polyp expansion. Best positioned on the sand bed or lower rockwork where they have room to expand comfortably. As they can inflate significantly, ensure adequate space around the colony to prevent contact with neighbouring corals.

  • Care Level & Compatibility

Generally considered moderately hardy once established, Lobophyllia spp. are suitable for aquarists with some reef-keeping experience. Stable water parameters are essential for maintaining vibrant colouration and healthy tissue expansion. Lobos can display semi-aggressive behaviour, extending feeder or sweeper tentacles, particularly at night. Provide sufficient spacing from other corals to avoid unwanted stinging interactions.

  • Water Parameters

For optimal health and growth, maintain consistent reef conditions:

Temperature: 24–26°C

Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG

Calcium: 400–450 ppm

Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm

Stability is key to preventing stress and encouraging full polyp extension.

  • Feeding

Although photosynthetic and reliant on quality lighting, Lobophyllia corals benefit from occasional target feeding with suitable coral foods such as fine marine pellets, reef foods or small pieces of meaty marine fare. Supplemental feeding can encourage improved growth, enhanced colour and fuller tissue expansion.

  • Summary

Lobophyllia corals combine bold structure, vibrant colour and rewarding growth, making them an excellent choice for reef keepers looking to introduce dramatic texture and long-lasting visual impact to their aquarium.
