Purple Tang – Zebrasoma xanthurum
 
The Purple Tang is one of the most prestigious and instantly recognisable tangs in the marine aquarium hobby. With its deep royal purple body, striking yellow tail and elegant sail-like fins, Zebrasoma xanthurum brings exceptional colour, movement and presence to a mature reef aquarium.
 
This species is best suited to a spacious, well-established system with plenty of live rock for grazing and open swimming room. Purple Tangs are active algae grazers and will spend much of their day browsing rockwork and aquarium surfaces, making them both a beautiful display fish and a useful addition to the aquarium.
 
Generally reef safe with corals and most invertebrates, although they can become territorial, particularly towards other tangs or similar-shaped surgeonfish. Introductions should be planned carefully, especially in established communities. A varied diet should include marine algae, nori, spirulina-based foods, quality pellets and enriched frozen foods to support colour, immune health and long-term condition.
