  • Toadstool Leather Coral Colony (Sarcophyton spp.)

A Toadstool Leather Coral colony is a hardy and highly recognisable soft coral, admired for its distinctive mushroom-shaped cap and flowing polyps. Belonging to the genus Sarcophyton, these corals form thick, sturdy stalks topped with a broad, textured disc that gives them their characteristic “toadstool” appearance.

As a colony, multiple heads or a large, well-developed cap create impressive movement and presence within the aquarium, making it an ideal centrepiece for both mixed reef and soft coral systems.

  • Colour & Appearance

Toadstool colonies are typically found in natural shades of tan, cream, green and occasionally yellow tones. Under blue spectrum lighting, the extended polyps often display enhanced fluorescence, creating a soft, shimmering effect across the colony.

When fully extended, hundreds of fine polyps cover the cap, producing gentle, flowing motion in the current. Periodically, the coral may retract its polyps and develop a waxy coating — a natural shedding process that helps remove algae and debris before re-extending even more vibrantly.

  • Placement & Flow Requirements

Toadstool Leather Corals thrive in moderate lighting and prefer moderate, indirect water flow.

• Ensure sufficient flow to keep the surface clear of detritus, especially during shedding periods.

• Avoid overly strong, direct currents that may cause the coral to remain retracted.

They are best positioned on stable rockwork with enough space to allow full cap expansion.

  • Care Level & Compatibility

Toadstool colonies are considered hardy and beginner-friendly, making them suitable for a wide range of aquarists. They adapt well to stable reef conditions and are often recommended for those establishing a soft coral aquarium.

As with many leather corals, they can release natural chemical compounds into the water. Running activated carbon and maintaining good filtration helps ensure compatibility in mixed reef systems.

  • Water Parameters

Maintain stable reef conditions for best results:

• Temperature: 24–26°C

• Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG

• Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

• Calcium: 380–450 ppm

• Magnesium: 1200–1350 ppm

Consistency is more important than chasing exact numbers.

  • Feeding

Toadstool Leather Corals are primarily photosynthetic and rely on quality lighting for the majority of their energy needs. While direct feeding is not essential, they may benefit from occasional broadcast feeding of fine coral foods or phytoplankton in nutrient-controlled systems.

  • Summary

A Toadstool Leather Coral colony offers movement, resilience and natural reef character, making it a versatile and rewarding addition to aquariums of all experience levels.
